Alphonso Deal Scholarship Award:

PURPOSE OF AWARD: The National Black Police Association is seeking to enhance higher education opportunities among qualified graduates.  It is our desire that through this financial award a student (male or female) might be afforded the opportunity to have higher educational training in the academics of law enforcement, or other related areas, for the betterment of the Criminal Justice system.

METHOD OF SELECTION
1. All entries will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee.
2. The winner will be chosen based on adherence to contest rules.

Annually, Arts for Life! recognizes 35 graduating high school seniors from across Florida for outstanding achievement in the arts. Each recipient receives a $1,000 cash scholarship toward their pursuit of the arts in higher education.
To be considered for an Arts for Life! Scholarship, students must:
• Be graduating from high school from a public, private or home education program in Florida in Spring of 2009.

Award Criteria
Selection of recipients will be based on solid academic performance and exemplary community service or work experience. Consideration may also be given to participation and leadership in school activities. Financial need is not considered.
Awards are for undergraduate study only and are awarded without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender or disability.
The authorized distribution for awards is $1,500,000. One thousand (1,000) scholarships of $1,500 each will be granted.
Awards are one-time only and are not renewable. Previous recipients may not reapply for another award.
Application Procedure
Registration is a two step process.

  • Students must provide a unique and valid email address and create a password. Correspondence throughout the electronic application process will be by email. Students failing to use a valid email address that will accept bulk email and students who do not regularly check email will not receive consideration. Be sure to add bestbuy@scholarshipamerica.org to your Contacts, Address Book, or 'safe senders' list.
  • Students must identify the two Best Buy stores nearest to the high school they attend.

Applicants may wish to gather the following information that is necessary for the application:

  • List of student's volunteer community service, work experience and participation in school activities
  • Student's high school transcript of grades
  • High school address and phone number
  • Principal name

Are You Eligible?
Students may apply from public, private, vocational, technical, parochial and alternative high schools throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Applicants must be high school seniors who:

  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent.
  • Work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year (unless individual circumstances prevent the student's involvement).

TOPIC: “How Does a Realtor® Professional Benefit the Community?”  This essay contest is open only to high school seniors who reside in the state of Florida and plan on continuing their education at a college, university, technical school or some other institution of higher learning. Florida Southern College:

In order to be considered, students must be Florida residents. Some scholarships require interviews, while the majority do not. More than half of the awards and scholarships have a 3.0 or higher GPA requirement. They are all given to freshman. The George M. Brooker Scholarship provides tuition assistance to minority college students who plan to enter real estate management and make it their career. Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards The Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards (HHYA) were
founded in 1998 to identify and promote the next generation of role models by rewarding their accomplishments in the classroom and community with educational grants and putting them in a position from which to lead. Entering its 10th year, this national leadership program has expanded from five students from five cities receiving a total of $5,000 to nearly 300 students from 12 regions receiving approximately $650,000. These outstanding young leaders are set forth as role models for their peers during the regional ceremonies. After conducting an exhaustive media and grass roots-driven search, graduating high school seniors of Hispanic descent are selected based on their academic achievement, community service, category focus, and an essay about their heritage from 13,000 applications. The
average GPA for these students and community-minded youngsters is 3.50. Categories in

Holocaust Remembrance Project Essay Topic & Writing Prompt:

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:  Students responding to this year’s writing contest should study the Holocaust and then, in an essay of no more than 1,200 words:

(a) analyze why it is vital that the remembrance, history and lessons of the Holocaust be passed to new generations; and

(b) suggest what you, as students, can do to combat and prevent prejudice, discrimination and violence in our world today.

Students may study any aspect of the Holocaust that interests them, and are encouraged to tie-in current events and/or other genocides as they relate to the importance of why we should remember the Holocaust.  Simply be sure to respond to the two questions posed in the prompt (above).   See contest rules for complete details and submission requirements.

In preparation for writing, students should research information from a variety of sources to assist them in the study of the Holocaust. Primary and secondary source material could include: historical and reference material; interviews, eyewitness accounts and oral testimonies; official documents and other primary sources; readings from diaries, letters, autobiographies and works of poetry; video or audiotapes, films, art, CD-ROM and Internet source. - Through its Education and Leadership Development Program, the Jackie Robinson Foundation provides scholarships of up to 7,500 annually to minority high school students showing leadership potential and demonstrating financial need to attend an accredited 4-year college or university of their choice. You must be a U.S. citizen in order to qualify for the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship Award. In addition, you cannot possess a 2 or 4 year degree when apply for this scholarship. Lombardi Scholars Program (The University of Florida) Senior, who has applied to UF for fall admission, in top 5% of class, outstanding service to community, demonstrates leadership, extracurricular involvement, and evidence of strong moral character. Sallie Mae Fund Unmet Need Scholarship Program

Provides scholarships to help meet last-dollar needs of low-income students. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have a family adjusted gross income of $30,000 or less, demonstrate unmet financial need of at least $1,000 after the financial aid award package has been determined and have a grade point average of 2.5 and above on a 4.0 scale. Recipients must enroll at the undergraduate level on a full-time basis at an accredited Title IV eligible institution in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. Awards range from $1,000 to $3,800.
